what I believe

The purpose of this page is to help you get to know a little better where I’m coming from before you come to one of my events or dive into my blog and my podcast. There’s some more information on the events page for people who are looking to book me.

I’m a believer in and a follower of Jesus. In other words, I’m a Christian. What that means is that I believe the following to be true. You ready?

There’s one God in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We call this idea the Trinity, and if it confuses you, don’t worry–it blows our minds too. Anyways, this God we’re talking about. Nobody made Him and He made everything. Not only that, but He holds it all together. He sees everything, knows everything, and is all-powerful. He is infinitely wise, just, and good. He made everything we see and everything we don’t. And He made it good.

But people, from our very first parents, brought sin into the world by rebelling against God. That’s why there’s sin and sickness and heartbreak and loss and injustice and poverty and death all around us. It’s why, no matter how much we try, we can’t get free from the things we do that cause us shame and hurt the people we want to love. And it’s why we fear death–because we know that we have to face a holy God who can’t have fellowship with sin.

The good news is, God made a plan. Thousands of years ago, God promised that He would send a Savior and bless all the nations through Him. The Bible tells us that this was always God’s plan–even before He created the world. He carefully prepared the way for the perfect moment–and then, when the time was right, Jesus was born to a virgin named Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus was God’s only Son, completely God and completely human. (This God-man thing is about as mind-blowing as the Trinity.) We call Him Jesus because that name means Savior, one who rescues us through His reign. He came to rescue His people from their sins and bring us back to God.

And that’s exactly what He did. Jesus lived a perfect human life. He never ever once did anything against God–because He was God. And as a fully human man, he earned the right to eternal life as a human. But He didn’t keep it for Himself; He came to earn it for us so that He could give it away. He took on Himself full responsibility for all the sins that we committed. And then He was nailed to a cross.

You may have heard about the cross before. You probably recognize it as a religious symbol. But before it was anything like that, the cross was a symbol of terror and cruelty. It was a horrible way for a person to die, set apart for the worst criminals. And Jesus chose to die on the cross because it emphasized the fact that He was taking all of our shame. He was going to suffer the wrath of God–God’s righteous rejection of sin–in our place. And He did. He suffered and died in our place. This truth of the death of Jesus in our place on the cross is the most beautiful demonstration of love that ever was and ever will be. Without it, we don’t even really know what love is.

But that’s not all–on the third day after He was crucified, Jesus rose from the dead with a restored and perfect body, showing that He has power over death and that He fully paid the price for our sin. And because this is true, we’re totally free from being condemned by God and the need condemn ourselves. What’s more, we have access to the power of the Holy Spirit and the love of God the Father–everything we need to put away our sin and live a life that pleases God. Jesus is the King of a new Kingdom in our hearts, in the hearts of everyone who believes in Him. And from that Kingdom He brings restoration and hope and purpose from God to every situation and circumstance of life. He’s the only good King, and the One who will reign when all the other kings and kingdoms of this world come to nothing.

Everyone who fully trusts in Jesus and what He’s done will not perish. We’ll still go through suffering and trouble and struggles with sin in this life, and someday we’ll die. But one day, when Jesus returns from Heaven, we’ll all be raised from death to eternal life just like He was, with perfect bodies to live in a brand new world free from heartache, suffering, pain and death. He’s gonna give us the eternal life that He paid for on the cross. And in that world, we will live forever to celebrate God and enjoy Him together (we call that worship).

Since worship is what forever is about, we want to start right now, even as we set our hope completely in the coming of Jesus. That’s why we have something called the church. It’s what happens when God’s people come together to share the struggles, the suffering, and the hope we have in Jesus, and to love and to care for each other the way that He cares for us. Jesus loves every one of His people and He wants to bring us together in the same way that He’s brought us all to God.
